Message: The Bible

Speaker: Greg Holder

Service Date: October 18, 2020 Plain Print Version

What is truth and why should it matter to me?

What can you rely on and where do you think the world looks to for truth?

At The Crossing, you may have heard the phrase "The Bible is home base for us." Is it for you as well? Discuss how you might explain that phrase to someone not just outside of our church but outside of the Faith?  (Leaders You might bring into the discussion the comment by Tristan Harris, from the film The Social Dilemma, but lest you get sidetracked, agree to save it for a later discussion.)

  • What cultural views have you observed seeping into the church, into the Christian worldview?
  • When does truth make you uncomfortable? How do you personally deal with that?

Take some time to read the Scriptures from the content box. Read Romans 12 in the Phillips translation and discuss how we can be squeezed into the world's mold. Where have you seen it in your own life?

  • The [Internet] Rabbit Hole-
    • How suggestible are you?  Are you a digital native or immigrant? (not sure? look up the definitions)
  • If indeed Scripture instructs us to renew our minds- how can we do this? Discuss and make a list.

Pastor Greg reminds us that we will always have questions. They never go away- the questions only change. For those in the group who are questioning the validity of Scripture and the claims of Christ- choose to focus on the M.A.P. (Manuscripts, Archeology, Prophecy) and where to seek out those answers. (see the Go Deeper content)

For those in the group who already have many questions settled- encourage discussion on how they could respond to those who do. What points from this message could be helpful in conversations with those who are searching-that could help you better understand and respond with grace and truth?

See 1 Peter 3:15 "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"

Close in prayer and have someone read the blessing from Numbers 6:24-26 over the group.

"One word of truth outweighs the whole world."
Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Reflect

"Christianity, if false, is of no importance. And if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important." C.S. Lewis How does this statement impact your worldview?
