Discuss20-30 minutes
- Have you ever wanted to quit something, but you knew God did not want you to? What happened?
- God says of Jesus, “Listen to him.” How do you know when Jesus was speaking to you? Do you have a story of when you felt Jesus was talking to you?
- “Peak experiences are not meant to be permanent addresses.” These experiences change and reshape us—but Jesus keeps moving in our lives. How is Jesus moving in your life right now? Is there any area of your life you need to submit to Jesus?
- Read the three accounts of the transfiguration. Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36. Take these verses in different translations and paint a word picture of what Jesus' physical transformation looked like. What stands out to you?
- Scholars say the transfiguration account gives more meaning to the words of Jesus spoken in Matthew 16:24-28. How does the transfiguration at this moment make a difference in the lives of the disciples? How do you think their faith and commitment is impacted?
- The transfiguration is a further revelation of Jesus' identity. The disciples experienced a part of His divine nature they had not experienced before. Has Jesus ever revealed Himself in a new way to you, so that you experienced more of Him than ever before? Have you seen Jesus revealed in a way that your commitment to Him has grown stronger?
Pray10-15 minutes
Ask for prayer requests and then you may opt to pray the following prayer.
Lord, thank You for the ways in which You reveal Yourself to us. Give us eyes to see You, even in the midst of the supernatural. Help us to embrace You even in the mystery.
We pray to hear You when You are speaking to us. Give us clarity in the direction You are leading us. Jesus, You are the same in the valley as You are on the mountain. Give us faith to follow You and trust You in every area of our life; may we go wherever You lead and do whatever You lead us to do. In Jesus' name, Amen
Action Steps5-10 minutes
Between now and next week, here are some suggestions for action steps.
Attend the Weekend Service: Note any takeaways, next steps, or reflections in a notebook. These will help you as you prepare to participate for your small group, and your small group will benefit from your insights and questions as you learn together.
Another Practical Action Step:
- Reflection & Prayer: Take 10 minutes and meditate of Matthew 17:1-8. Imagine you are there at the transfiguration. In the passage, we see the disciples react in fear. What would your reaction be? How do you think this encounter would impact you? At the end of the 10 minutes, pray. Pray a prayer of gratitude and expectation. Pray that Jesus would continue to reveal Himself to you.
