Connect20-25 minutes
Connect with your group about life this past week and then discuss the following questions.
- What is your familiarity with the person of Moses? In your experience, how close to the Bible is Moses portrayed culturally?
- How good are you at waiting and how likely are you to take matters into your own hands when the wait seems too long?
Also take time to reflect on your action steps last week:
- Were you able to identify any idols that you put before Jesus? If you feel comfortable, you can share your takeaways with your group.
- Did you try any ideas from John Mark Comer? What did you try? How did it impact your thinking and your week?
Learn5-7 minutes
You will watch a short clip of the message from this series to set up your group discussion. The full version of the message is also available
online to reference before or after your group meeting.
Discuss20-30 minutes
- Are there specific areas in your life that, when challenges or difficulties arise, your first notion is to put your confidence in yourself rather than in God?
- Which of the four potential options Kimberly gave as possible reasons Moses disobeyed do you most identify with?
- Stress causes you to act out of character
- Stress causes you to use the "easy" button
- You jump to old, familiar ways rather than following the actual instructions
- Anger leads to arrogance which leads to wanting to "prove" yourself
- Answer Kimberly's question from the end of the clip—how does it go when you decide to do something or solve something a little out of your expertise with no input, wise counsel, or help from others?
-
Read aloud Deuteronomy 34:1-12. God takes Moses to the top of the mountain and shows him the Promised Land in the distance. Though Moses will never enter it, this is his legacy. Have you ever worked toward something, walked toward a goal, and then not received the "prize?" If so, how would you describe it? Can you relate to Moses? How do you think he felt? What do you notice about his response?
- Read aloud Psalm 90:12. What is your initial reaction to this passage? What comparisons do you see between this verse and the idea of legacy?
- Look up Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:12, and Galatians 6:9. All three of these passages are words from Paul. How do these actions that are mentioned help to cultivate a legacy? How have you seen them create a legacy in and through the people you know?
- How are you leaving a legacy? Are you doing anything intentional in this area?
Pray10-15 minutes
Ask for prayer requests and then you may opt to pray the following prayer.
Jesus—thank You for loving us just as we are even though we consistently and regularly mess up. Help us to be aware of when we're trying to accomplish things on our own instead of relying on You. Remind us that You are the author of our story and our role is to follow You even when it seems strange, difficult, or takes longer than we want. Help us daily to move in the direction that is towards You so that we may become closer to You just like Moses. May our legacy one day be that of one that glorifies You and points to Your holiness.
In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
Action Steps5-10 minutes
Between now and next week, here are some suggestions for action steps.
Attend the Weekend Service: Note any takeaways, next steps, or reflections in your Peak Experiences notebook. These will help you prepare to participate in your small group, and your small group will benefit from your insights and questions as you learn together.
Bible Reflection/Journal: Take a moment to look up each verse and write down who God says we are in each one. Then, take a few minutes to pray and reflect on the questions below.
Do you know who you are? Do you truly grasp how God sees you? How are you different than you used to be? How does knowing that you mean so much to Him influence how you live your life? As you grow in faith and understanding of your relationship with God, what transformation in your life are you praying for?
