Session #4: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
Connect
20-25 minutes
Connect with your group about life in the past week, then discuss these questions.
What are some things that you consider to be your "daily bread" or needs?
Reflecting on Action Steps from Last Week:
Were you able to serve someone this week? If so, share with your group about your experience. Did anything surprise you?
If you listened to the clip from Pete, what are your “parking space prayers?” What were your reflections on praying for small and large things?
Learn
5-7 minutes
You will watch a short clip of the message from this series to set up your group discussion. The full version of the message is also available
online
to reference before or after your group meeting.
Discuss
20-30 minutes
How did you sum up last weekend’s message in a sentence? Give time for each person to share and see how your takeaways were similar or different.
If we asked God to "give us this day our daily bread,"
every day
, how might that push against the lies Angela described, and shape our hearts over time?
What does it mean to you personally that Jesus said, "I'm the true bread...I am the Bread of Life?"
Read
Matthew 6:25-34
. It’s easy to focus on our worries. Instead, think about the ways that God has been faithful in your life. Where and how has God been faithful? How do Jesus’ words encourage you?
Read
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 & Psalm 100:4
. What is the relationship between gratitude and worship? What steps can you take to practice gratitude this week?
Pray
10-15 minutes
Ask for prayer requests and then close your time together with this prayer:
Good Father,
Thank You for who You are and all that You provide. We are most thankful for Your Son, Jesus, who gives us forgiveness, life, and new purpose. Thank You for simple blessings like beautiful fall evenings, the breath we have right in this moment, and many other things that are unique to each of us.
Help us slow down, listen, pray, worship, and be grateful for all the ways that You are working in each of our lives.
Please lead us to trust in Your provision and release our anxieties as Jesus calls us to in Matthew 6:25-34. Much of the time we are unaware of Your goodness, so open our eyes. Help us see who You are and all that You provide. We praise and thank You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Action Steps
5-10 minutes
Between now and next week, here are some suggestions for action steps.
Attend the Weekend Service:
If you could sum up the message in one sentence, what would it be? (Write this and any other takeaways in the Pray Like This notebook and bring it with you to group.)
If you and your group want to go deeper, here are some additional action steps. With your group, select one of these to commit to this week:
Prayer Practice:
Look for God’s blessings and the “daily bread” you’ve experienced each day. Take a moment to write those ideas down daily. Then, pray and thank God for those gifts.
Prayer Focus:
This week, focus on the line, “Give us this day our daily bread” of the Lord’s Prayer. Each day, call to mind and pray about something you would put on your daily bread list.
